My Road to Leadership

Looking back over my personal statement letter for my admission to my masters program, I can’t help but think about where I was professionally at the time.  I had recently turned a corner in my organization and was getting more responsibility, but I realized I was lacking the education to reach my ultimate goals.  I wrote in my essay that I wanted to pursue my master’s degree so that I could further my career and take on a leadership role in my organization.  To be honest there was another reason I wanted to pursue my masters program.  I wanted to be extremely successful in the program so I could prove to myself that the underachieving I did in my undergrad was more about not applying myself and less about my intelligence.

As I have progressed through my master’s work I have come to a realization of what my real goals are my true goals.  In my essay I talked about how I relished my role as an advisor for MSU students and how the master’s degree would help me earn a leadership within my office so that I could better serve the students.  However, as I approached the end of my master’s study I realized I wanted even more; more for myself, more for the students that I serve, and more for Michigan State University.  I alluded to this in my essay, but I was a little bit skeptical on how the master’s program would affect me, and how successful I would be in the program.

Reading my personal statement again I have noticed something that has been a constant even when I was an undergraduate student at Michigan State.  That constant is my fondness for this institution.  I have really enjoyed being a Spartan, and that is highlighted throughout my essay.  I like to point out that growing up I wanted to be a Spartan, then I became a Spartan, and now I assist other Spartans on a daily basis.  As I move forward in my career I want to continue that trend, but in more of a leadership capacity.  Starting this fall I will be beginning the Hale Doctoral program at MSU, and this will help me to reach the goals I set for myself in my personal statement for my master’s program.
